Odes to Peony
By Mr. Sheng Dongqiao
1.
Rain or shine,
I see you through window blinds
I mock myself, for this infatuation
In a spring night you burst open
Casting shadows in the moon
Shadows fragrant
Speaking words of red and purple
Your gift of tenderness
Is beyond my brush
Why one bothers with riches
I do not understand
When in your glory
Peace and joy abound
*Peony is like lily of the valley for Chinese. It is known as the flower of riches and glory.
2.
In my old age,
I fell in love with painting flowers
Dots and strokes of rouge
Bring forth this heavenly scent
And this joyful spring
Onto my paper, white as snow
Bees
Butterflies
Come dancing by
You could look weak
Or strong
I am solely to blame
Or to take pride
I refuse to believe
Glory is a matter of luck
I remember days when
I hold hands of my beloved
On a green meadow
On a fine day
Tender pink
Youth everlasting
3.
As a gray-haired man
I have no further aspirations
Is it laughable
To covet leisure
While toiling away
All night I paint
While others have had three dreams
I tried ten poems
To go with the painting
And I deleted nine
From Luoyang, the capital of peony
I got these old roots
Which I split
In anticipation of a new bush
New buds
Which I will inevitably admire
But when?
I have to ask my friend
Who has a green thumb
In the suburbs west of town
Is it easier to paint
Or to plant
