川普竞选美国总统所向披靡,政敌难以抵挡,在共和党内部,不愿意他成为候选人的人也已无可奈何。比如共和党人、议长保罗·莱恩(Paul Ryan)很不乐意支持川普,但为了避免党内分裂,也没把话说死,留有日后支持的余地。川普就好比一辆刹车失灵的车辆,沿路的人们除了避让只能遭殃。在政界人们已经无计可施,在美国民间,压根儿不喜欢川普当选的声音却不绝于耳。在文化界和教育界,反感川普的声音最响。川普代表的粗俗、排外、反智,和文教界所倡导的一切背道而驰。顺便说一句,美国各学科的政治倾向很不同,一般来说,文科政治参与更积极一些,下图是Inside Higher Ed发布的一项调查,上面我们能看出投票率最高的学科分别是教育、人文、医疗卫生、传媒新闻等、社会科学。投票率最低的五个学科分别是:物理、技术、公园娱乐休闲和保健管理、数学和统计、工程。这个也好理解,后者貌似是谁上台都没有多大影响。

近日,超过600位美国作家联名给美国人民写了一封公开信。公开信反对川普的排外(“美国虽也有过短暂的排外和保守时期,但其历史从一开始就是一个伟大的实验,将不同背景的人聚在一起,和睦相处,而不是让其彼此倾轧。)、煽动(“蓄意煽动社会上最为卑劣、狂暴的分子,鼓励其追随者以嚣张和吼叫对付对手,威胁与其意见不同的人,贬低女性和各少数族群。”),认为他不具有领导素质(“我们相信,知识、经验、灵活和历史意识是一个领导者必备素质。”),警惕他会将美国带向独裁(“独裁则是操纵和分裂、煽动和谎言的历史。”),“鉴于上述原因,我们出自良知,毫不含糊地反对唐纳德· J· 川普为美国总统候选人。”

这封公开信的发起者是作家安德鲁·奥特舒尔(Andrew Altschul)和马克·斯洛卡(Mark Slouka),二者可能中国读者都还比较陌生。但是签署的作家中有很多中国读者的熟面孔,如斯蒂芬·金(Stephen King)、科尔姆·托宾(Colm Tóibín)、戴夫·埃格斯(Dave Eggers)、莉迪亚·戴维斯(Lydia Davis)、朱诺特·迪亚兹(Junot Díaz)等。华裔作家哈金、谭恩美也在其中。

美国作家对国际事务发声的情形不少,比如美国笔会组织(PEN America)的一项使命,就是给国际上受到言论压制和不公待遇的作家、记者发声,抱团取暖。针对国内的竞选写这种公开信,有一定的争议性,支持者认为是作家的良知在说话。

反对者则号称要拿这些签名的名单到书店按图索骥,抵制这些作家的图书。作家的支持者表示不屑,因为这些号称抵制者,可能平时也不怎么读书。但他们的呵呵得可能早了点。《华盛顿邮报》艾丽莎·罗森伯格(Alyssa Rosenberg)则称作家打不过川普,是因为川普代表电视传媒,他非常擅长操纵包括社交媒体在内的当代社会的舆论渠道,而作家代表纸笔传媒,只能眼睁睁被川普碾压。

也有作家本身,对这种签名的做法明确表示反对,比如收到签名信后,科幻作家斯蒂芬·布鲁斯特(Steven Brust)表示,他虽然也反对川普,但是公开信的做法,其实是暗中支持民主党,让人“两害相逢择其轻”。因为不管是民主党还是共和党,美国政府都对一些导致川普崛起的社会邪恶因素,睁一只眼闭一只眼。今年的希拉里,同样算不上什么好人选。只不过布鲁斯特所支持的“社会公平党”( Socialist Equality Party)候选人杰瑞怀特(Jerry White)和耐尔斯·尼姆斯(Niles Niemuth)绝大部分美国人根本没有听说过,支持他们与投弃权票无异。

作家的无力反击,不过是一种姿态。不去反击,也是一种姿态。都不具有实质意义。现实的情形,是绝大部分美国人必须在希拉里和川普这两个非常不理想的候选人之间作出无奈的选择。而今的美国人可能都在纳闷:我们如何走到了这一步?

一封公开信给美国人民

作为作家,我们尤其明白,语言可被人在权力旗号下以各种方式滥用。

我们相信,只有保持多元化,用和而不同方式解决分歧,并通过合理的辩论来达成共识,才有名副其实的民主。

美国虽也有过短暂的排外和保守时期,但其历史从一开始就是一个伟大的实验,将不同背景的人聚在一起,和睦相处,而不是让其彼此倾轧。

独裁则是操纵和分裂、煽动和谎言的历史。

寻求正义的前提,是尊重真相。

我们相信,知识、经验、灵活和历史意识是一个领导者必备素质。

财富和名声,并不自动让人有资格代表美国发言,领导它的军队,维护它的外部结盟关系,代表它的人民。

我们现在这位候选人,蓄意煽动社会上最为卑劣、狂暴的分子,鼓励其追随者以嚣张和吼叫对付对手,威胁与其意见不同的人,贬低女性和各少数族群。他的崛起,需要我们每个人马上给出有力的回应。

鉴于上述原因,我们出自良知,毫不含糊地反对唐纳德· J· 川普为美国总统候选人。
